Trauma-Informed Practice

Trauma-informed care—called “the universal precaution of behavioral health”—is a framework that can make any environment more safe for those affected by trauma. Many people aren’t even aware of trauma responses to various situations.

Trauma-informed care is called “universal precaution” because, much like health care universal precautions, it presumes everyone MAY have trauma. We treat and interact with people as if they may have it in order to avoid triggering or re-traumatizing them.

How does this help?

It fosters an environment that prioritizes safety, both for the practitioners, the staff, and the consumers. This allows interactions to be more productive and more authentic. A setting that utilizes the principles of trauma-informed care builds resilience in all parties involved.
